The Broad Street

The Broad Street

istoric Charleston is known for glamor, romance and most of all civility.  Long known for its houses of exquisite style and grace, the Historic District preserves the legacy of the past in houses of distinction.  Nowhere is this more evident than in one of the city's most magnificent settings, Broad Street.  This peaceful sanctuary within walking distance to the Battery and just about every area of historical significance, boasts some of the finest residences of past and present.  Traditional design elements echoing the Gothic revival and Palladian influences are everywhere.  Large and small, these Charleston homes reflect the graceful lifestyle of a bygone era.

Our Broad Street home is patterned after just such a romantic period in a lovely, town home with surprising conveniences.  The familiar two-tier porch in the front has always been a haven to catch summer breezes by locals who knew this long ago.  Tall windows allow plenty of sun light and facilitated the cooling of interior spaces.  In typical Charleston fashion, the house is capped with a terra cotta red, standing seam metal roof that echoes the soothing sound of rain drops under the predictable summer afternoon shower.

Entering off the front covered porch, one is greeted in the foyer by stately columns framing the entrance to a large living room with fireplace to one end.  A private study is tucked directly off the foyer and boasts its own private half bath.  A series of columns continue into the rest of the house echoing the stately theme through out.  A generous kitchen and family area are well integrated, providing an open area for entertaining and family activity.  A more formal dining room sits to one end extending the expansive, open feel of the space.  An adjacent, covered screened porch open off the dining room offering another spot for summer dining or early morning breakfasts.

Stairs lead down to a two car garage beyond the kitchen and up to the second floor above.

Upstairs, a surprisingly large space unfolds with four bedrooms and a centrally located media/play room.  The master bedroom with luxurious bath and large, walk-in closets is located mid-way up off the first landing creating a private area separate from the main floor.  There, three additional bedrooms have their own baths and plenty of closet space.  The two front bedrooms enjoy separate access to a covered porch overlooking the entrance.  An open area for a media/play room is centrally located for everyone to enjoy.  One wall with built-in bookcases, counter and cabinets below provide essential storage and work area.  A laundry/linen storage room is conveniently located in the center of the floor within easy access to all bedrooms.

This understated town house is definitely full of surprises and convenience on the inside.
