La Bastide

La Bastide (Click image to enlarge)

n France, a walled town or extension of a former village, for example around a medieval castle set up on a knoll, was often referred to as a "bastide".  Our La Bastide takes its name from those early villages.  The house has the hallmarks of medieval architecture and resembles buildings of the period that were added to throughout the centuries.  From the diamond pattern of the leaded glass windows in the bowed bay window to the steeply pitched roofs, exposed rafter tails and varied construction materials, it takes on the look of an ancient cluster of structures that hint of multiple expansions.

Typical Dormer Detailing

Detailed articulation of the intricate facade creates cozy porches, overhangs, interesting dormered windows, nooks and crannies that add interest and character to the plan.  The functional ground floor interior opens up from the foyer with views through double French doors that flank the great room fireplace to the columned, covered terrace and the gardens beyond.  French doors on the opposite wall open to yet another covered porch with views to the front.

The great room with its high, beamed ceiling creates a spectacular, airy space filled with light.  A study with second fireplace and bowed bay window add a retreat for quiet solitude just inside the entrance.  Secluded nearby, the master suite and bath are within easy reach of everything.  French doors provide private access from the master bedroom to the porch for easy access.

Just off the great room, and formal dining room, a sizeable kitchen and breakfast area connect to the three car garage , laundry and pantry.  A rear covered portico shades another kitchen access from the garden.  The generous 4,198 square feet is conceived with function and entertaining in mind.  Everything about this house contributes to its livability and charm.

Upstairs, the gallery overlooks the greatroom below as the beamed ceiling rises overhead.  A shed dormer off the gallery offers a perfect spot for a window seat or sofa for that late afternoon nap as the fireplace burns just below.  Two bedrooms, each with their private bath enter at the top of the landing.  Beyond the gallery at the other end is a large media room/playroom and a third bedroom and private bath.  A 354 square foot bonus room over the garage is accessed through the media room or through the breakfast area below.  The second set of stairs is particularly for families who desire easy access to the children's bedrooms and other areas that they may use frequently.

As with the ground floor, functionality is the key word for the second floor.  Together, they result in a very user friendly plan that makes for the perfect new "old" French Country house.
