The Mountain Laurel 1

The Mountain Laurel Mountain House Plan by New South Classics
The Mountain Laurel 1

agic emanates from the hills of the southern highlands.  The fall sun streaks through the golden leaves and the fragrant smell of hickory and ash burning in the fireplace fills the chilly air.  Something about mountain living and its ever changing natural beauty draws us to the hills.  A placid lake view from the autumn porch, or dark nights where the stars shine their brightest, make one feel at peace with the world and safe and cozy in their mountain home.

Our Mountain Laurel series is named for one of the beautiful native flowering shrubs that call the Southern Appalachian mountains home.  Like the plant, our mountain house is right at home in the hills and its style, colors and rustic materials reflect the region and its environs.  The Adirondack style evokes our early American mountain heritage and sits unobtrusively in a wooded setting careful not to disturb the natural beauty that surrounds it.

Mountain Laurel 1, Rear Elevation

Rustic, wavy siding of weathered gray, or heavy, cedar shakes of burnt sienna blend naturally in a wooded setting.  Heavy wooden beams, accents of laurel branch, and native Carolina and Tennessee stone in hues of brown and gray offer scale and contrast that blend naturally with the environment.  Even a sudden shower can be welcomed as the sound of rain on the metal roof of the wrap-around porch takes one back to simpler times.

This 2,738 sq. ft. house open up to the outside immediately upon entering.  A 21' x 29' great room with fireplace and dining area face the back for perfect mountain, valley or lake views.  A open kitchen with entertainment island and serving counter allow for easy entertaining and flexible circulation.  High beamed ceilings vault upward and bring the outside in through large glass doors and transoms above.  A covered autumn porch and exterior fireplace open off the great room.  A large stone terrace off the dining room provides extra entertaining and dining area outside.

The large master bedroom on the main floor has its own fireplace and opens directly to the covered porch.  A perfect spot for early morning coffee, or listening to late night serenading cicadas.  The master bath is a definite surprise with its separate his and hers vanities, tub, large shower, linen shelf, and walk-in closet.  A powder room is discretely tucked off the foyer at the bottom of the stairs next to a convenient laundry.  A two car garage can be accessed in any weather under a covered breezeway just off the kitchen.

A winding stair topped with a clerestory above tall, Prairie style windows makes for a fun, light-filled transition.  At the top, a study alcove is tucked to one side overlooking the stair and the foyer below.  Two additional bedrooms spin off a sitting area that brings light in through another overlook to the vaulted great room.  Each bedroom has a private bath and ample storage.  A linen closet on the same floor stores all necessary linen and supplies for guests and family.

We think you will find the Mountain Laurel and its "cousins" in the Mountain Laurel family ideal for mountain living.  One will be perfect for you!
