The Mountain Laurel 2

Mountain Laurel 2

ur Mountain Laurel 2  appears to be similar to the Mountain Laurel 1.  It, too, is right at home in the hills and its style, colors and rustic materials reflect the region and its environs.  The Adirondack style evokes our early American mountain heritage and sits unobtrusively in a wooded setting careful not to disturb the natural beauty that surrounds it.

There are some major differences, however.  This plan is designed specifically for a sloping site that allows for a lower level walk-out in lieu of a second floor.  As many mountain and lake front properties offer this potential, a lower level takes full advantage of resultant space below the house and frees up space above the first floor for high, vaulted ceilings, bright clerestories and dormer windows that allow the sun to stream in.

Mountain Laurel 2, Rear Elevation

Rustic, wavy siding of weathered gray, or heavy, cedar shakes of burnt sienna blend naturally in a wooded setting.  Heavy trusses, accents of laurel branch railings on the wrap-around porch and native Carolina and Tennessee stone in hues of brown and gray offer scale and contrast that blend naturally with the environment.  Even a sudden shower can be welcomed as the sound of rain on the metal roof of the wrap-around porch takes one back to simpler times.

This 2,860 Sq. Ft. house open up to the outside immediately upon entering.  An 18'-4" x 29' great room with fireplace and dining area face the back for perfect mountain, valley or lake views.  The sizable kitchen opens to the great room allowing for easy entertaining and flexible circulation.  A covered autumn porch with exterior, stone fireplace open off the great room creating a great area for entertaining.  A large deck off the dining room provides extra entertaining and dining area outside.

An 18'-4"' x 29' great room with stone fireplace and adjoining dining area face the back for perfect mountain, valley or lake views.  Rough wood trusses vault upward and bring the outside in through large glass doors, transoms, and dormer windows above.  A covered autumn porch and exterior stone fireplace open off the great room.  A large deck off the dining room provides extra entertaining and dining area outside.

As with the Mountain Laurel, the large master bedroom on the main floor of the Mountain Laurel 2 has its own fireplace has views and opens directly to the covered porch.  A perfect spot for early morning coffee, or listening to late night serenading cicadas.  The master bath is a definite surprise with its separate his and hers vanities, tub, large shower, linen shelf, and walk-in closet.  Just off the foyer, a cozy study sports a high, coffered ceiling and large windows.  The powder room is discretely tucked off the foyer next to a convenient laundry.  A two car garage can be accessed in any weather under a covered breezeway off the kitchen.

An open staircase leads to the large den below opening to the terrace and shaded by the deck above.  Two bedrooms with private baths open to either side of the den and open to the terrace for easy access to the lake or outside activities.  The covered terrace is perfect for an afternoon picnic with a built in grill and ample space for tables and chairs.  By a lake, this feature makes entertaining easy as dining and entertaining can occur where the activities are and keeps wet foot traffic out of the house!  Additional unfinished space to the front of the basement can be outfitted as desired for convenient storage or upfitted for a media room.

All in all, this is a surprisingly functional house with big features not often associated with houses under 3,000 square feet of space.

New!

We have added the option of a media room and adjacent kitchenette to our Mountain Laurel 2 plan on the terrace level.  This incorporates space previously left unfinished and creates a basement walk-out of 1,032 heated and cooled square feet plus a sizable storage area accessible from the inside or outside for storage of sporting equipment and terrace furniture.
