The Mountain Laurel 3

The Mountain Laurel 3

his 4,121 sq. ft. Mountain Laurel 3 has three floors of living space to maximize buildable area on a relatively small footprint.  While it looks like its cousin, the Mountain Laurel 1, this plan was designed to take full advantage of a sloping site allowing for a lower level walk-out and a second floor.  As with the other plans in the Mountain Laurel series, high beamed ceilings, heavy, rough-hewn trusses, bright clerestories and dormer windows create the bright, airy feeling of a sunny mountain "lodge".

A special feature of this home plan is the ability to close the house off into two separate living areas.  If desired, one can be accessed from above and one from below.  This set up is perfect for an in-law suite or for special guests who have the luxury of being secluded in their private world with direct access to the covered terrace and the natural environment just outside.  Give your friends the key to the terrace level and be comforted in knowing the upper floors are reserved for you.  Or, open the whole house for that big family reunion by the lake.  The kids will love their world on the terrace level (and so will you!).

The Mountain Laurel 3, Rear Elevation

Immediately upon entering, one is struck by the airy atmosphere created by high ceilings and large open areas.  Above the entry foyer, a high ceiling and balcony above allow light to fill the space giving a sense of lofty spaciousness.

The kitchen with entertainment island and serving counter appears to be part of the great room allowing for easy entertaining and flexible circulation.  High, beamed ceilings vault upward and bring the outside in through large glass doors and transoms above.  A covered autumn porch and exterior stone fireplace open off the great room.  A large deck off the dining room provides extra entertaining and dining area outside.  This same deck and screened porch offer shade to the areas on the terrace below.

The large master bedroom on the main floor has its own fireplace and opens directly to the covered porch.  A perfect spot for early morning coffee, or listening to late night serenading cicadas.  The master bath is a definite surprise with its separate his and hers vanities, tub, large shower, linen shelf, and walk-in closet.  A powder room is discretely tucked off the foyer at the bottom of the stairs next to a convenient laundry.  A two car garage can be accessed in any weather under a covered breezeway just off the kitchen.

A winding stair topped with a clerestory above tall, Prairie style windows makes for a fun, light-filled transition.  At the top, a study alcove is tucked to one side overlooking the stair and the foyer below.  In lieu of stairs, one may choose to take the elevator to all three levels.  Above, two additional bedrooms spin off a sitting area that brings light in through another overlook to the vaulted great room.  Each bedroom has a private bath and ample storage.  A linen closet on the same floor stores all necessary linen and supplies for guests and family.

The lower level accessed by stair or elevator, offers two more bedrooms with private baths and direct access to a stone terrace.  In the center, a large den with fireplace, convenient kitchenette and sizable laundry provide a house within a house.  Ample storage space with interior and exterior access is the perfect place for those sporting items, deck furniture, and even potential space for an office, exercise room or media room.  A door separates the lower level from the rest of the house and may be locked for privacy above or below.
